Christian Health Association Sierra Leone
EL-SHADDAI – meaning “Rescue the Perish”. It started on the 30th January 2004, as a mobile clinic with one Traditional Birth Attendance (TBA), one Nursing Aide and myself, as a Senior Midwifery Sister-in-Charge. The war has seriously devastated the extreme part of the country called Bunumbu town. I saw it as a need to be visiting villages at first around me at Kenema, but later extended it to the nearby sections and chiefdoms, as people requested my services as they were suffering. With immense development made in treating different illness, and delivering babies, etc. the communities and 3 paramount chiefs from the Peje West, Peje-Bongay and Yawei Chiefdoms consulted among themselves and decided the land for the construction of clinic. I consulted the Project Manager, Pastor Francis Mambu who gave me the necessary support by providing me with building materials while the chiefdom helped with other materials. We were able to construct four (4) admission rooms, one consultation room, one laboratory room and labour room. The building was made out of mud bricks.
Having completed the clinic they all realized that it is a very big start and that they can now boast of one of the best clinic in the district even though we don’t have all the logistics. Five (5) years later I constructed another 3 rooms building, one for theater purpose, one for pharmacy and one for VIPs.
The catchment population is 400 patients. The distance from Freetown to Bunumbu is about 207 miles.
